Industrial Combination Block
|
Old "Southern Crescent" Industrial Combination Swage block:
This is a fairly primitive block and fairly well designed with only one weak corner.
The two curves at the top are catenaries created by bending a thin piece of wood or drawing by hand rather than drawing them with a compass.
These large curves and the shallow bowl depression make this a combination block rather than a strict industrial block.
New evidence indicates that this block may be a II&B Vulcan brand no. 4 or 4½
The image above indicates a brand NOT Vulcan and the owner says the dimensions are 15 x 15 and 270 pounds.
The Vulcan catalog page says 164 pounds. More mysteries than answers.
The lettern "O U T H E N" can be made out. This is part of a "Southern Crescent" logo.
